Why caravan and trailer wiring gives trouble
Trailer wiring lives a harder life than anything on the tow vehicle. It sits under the chassis, gets sprayed with water and road salt, flexes every time the trailer moves and spends months at a time parked outside doing nothing. Those are close to ideal conditions for corrosion, and corrosion is behind the large majority of trailer light faults we are called out to.
The symptoms are familiar. Indicators that work on one side and not the other, brake lights that come on with the headlights, a tail light that flickers over bumps, or everything working until the van is actually loaded and towed. Almost all of it traces back to one of four things: a corroded plug or socket, a damaged earth, water in a light housing, or a cheap repair joint that was never sealed properly.
Repairs that last
A twisted joint and a bit of insulation tape will get you home, and it will fail again within a season. Proper repairs use crimped and adhesive lined heat shrink joints, correctly sized cable, sealed connectors and a solid earth back to the chassis. A poor earth is worth singling out, because it produces the strangest symptoms of all. When the earth is marginal, current finds a path through whatever circuit it can, which is why a brake light can make an indicator glow or a tail light can pulse with the indicator.
Flat plug, round plug and modern vans
Seven pin flat, seven pin round and twelve pin flat connectors are all common in Australia, and a mismatch between tow vehicle and trailer is a routine job. Modern caravans add more to the loom again, with a charge line to the house battery, a reversing camera feed, electric brakes and sometimes a solar input, so the twelve pin plug has become the sensible default on anything recent. We can convert a vehicle or a van from one standard to another and label it so the next person knows what is what.
Trailer wiring questions
My trailer lights work on one car but not another. Why?
Usually a wiring standard mismatch, a faulty adaptor, or a bad earth that one vehicle tolerates and the other does not. Adaptors between plug types are a frequent culprit, because they add two more sets of contacts that can corrode.
The indicator makes the brake light flash. What causes that?
Nearly always a poor earth. When the dedicated earth path is corroded or broken, current backfeeds through another circuit and lights things it should not. Repairing the earth usually clears several odd symptoms at once.
Should I upgrade from a seven pin to a twelve pin plug?
If the van has a house battery, electric brakes, a camera or solar, yes. A twelve pin flat gives you dedicated circuits for the charge line and auxiliaries instead of trying to share the lighting wiring, which is both safer and far easier to fault find later.
Can wiring be repaired on site?
Yes. Most trailer and caravan wiring work is done wherever the van is parked, including at home or at a storage yard, so there is no need to tow a trailer with faulty lights across Melbourne to get it fixed.
How do I stop it happening again?
Keep the plug and socket clean and dry, use the cover on the socket, give the connector a light spray with an electrical contact protectant, and check the lights before every tow. Sealed joints and good earths do most of the work, but a thirty second check before you leave catches the rest.
