Find out why the battery is not staying charged
A battery warning light, slow starting or another flat battery can leave you wondering which part to replace. The alternator may be involved, but the charging system also includes the battery, drive components, wiring, connections and vehicle controls.
Julz Auto Electrix provides mobile alternator and charging system diagnosis and repairs across Melbourne’s western suburbs. We assess the symptoms and relevant parts of the system, then discuss what the findings mean for your vehicle.
If the car is parked at home or work, tell us whether it starts and whether the warning appears before or after the engine runs. We can discuss a suitable mobile appointment and the information needed to plan it.
Signs that call for a charging system check
The battery warning light stays on
The battery symbol is a charging system warning; it does not, by itself, prove the battery needs replacement. The fault may involve the alternator, its drive belt, wiring or other controls. If it appears while driving, stop somewhere safe as soon as practicable and seek advice. Do not assume the vehicle will continue running for a predictable distance.
A battery goes flat again after replacement
The replacement battery may be undercharged, there may be a charging fault, or something may be drawing current while the vehicle is parked. The battery itself still needs assessment. A repeat failure is a reason to investigate the wider system instead of assuming either battery was the only problem.
Lights or electrical systems behave inconsistently
Lights that dim unexpectedly or several electrical systems that act up together can be associated with supply problems. Loose connections, low voltage and other faults may produce overlapping symptoms. Tell us which systems are affected and whether the behaviour changes with engine speed or electrical load.
There is a new noise or smell
A squeal, grinding noise or burning smell needs attention, but it is not a reliable diagnosis of an alternator from a distance. Belts, pulleys, wiring and other components may be involved. If you notice smoke, severe overheating or a strong burning smell, stop safely and arrange assistance rather than continuing the journey.
What charging system diagnosis involves
Testing needs to suit the vehicle and the conditions in which the problem occurs. A single voltage reading can be misleading, particularly on a vehicle that deliberately varies its charging output.
Depending on the symptoms, checks may include:
- Battery condition and state of charge.
- Charging performance under suitable operating conditions and electrical loads.
- The condition of the alternator drive belt and related components.
- Main charging connections, battery terminals and earths.
- Voltage losses through relevant cables or connections.
- Fault information and charging controls where applicable.
- Further investigation of electrical draw while parked, when indicated.
The findings guide the repair discussion. They may point to the alternator, a connection, cabling or another part of the system. Some faults need more time to reproduce, especially when they occur only after the vehicle has been parked or warmed up.
Repair options depend on what has failed
An alternator replacement is one possible outcome, but it should follow an assessment of the fault. A damaged cable or poor connection calls for different work, and replacing the alternator will not automatically correct it.
We discuss whether repair or replacement is appropriate, taking account of the vehicle, part availability and access. Some alternators are relatively accessible; others require considerable dismantling or workshop equipment. Confirming those details helps set realistic expectations for mobile work.
The battery may also need attention if it has been repeatedly discharged. That does not mean a new battery is always required alongside an alternator. Its condition should guide the decision. See our battery replacement service for related help.
Modern charging systems and added accessories
Many modern vehicles manage charging through electronic controls. Output can change with operating conditions, so testing needs to account for the manufacturer’s strategy. Older rules of thumb do not suit every vehicle.
This also matters when adding a second battery, caravan charger or touring accessories. The equipment needs to work with the vehicle’s charging system and the battery being charged. A suitable DC to DC charger can be part of that design, but compatibility, installation and settings still matter.
If the problem began after an upgrade, tell us what was installed and provide the product details. For trailer or caravan charging concerns, our caravan electrical service can help connect the investigation across both vehicles.
Make the appointment more useful
Have the make, model and year ready, along with the age of the battery if known. Mention recent jump starts, battery replacements, warning messages and accessory installations. If the vehicle loses charge only after several days, explain that pattern when booking.
Julz Auto Electrix services Melbourne’s west, including Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Williamstown. We will discuss the location and access needed for a mobile visit. For faults involving several electrical systems, see our diagnostics and repair service.
Alternator repair questions
Can you replace an alternator at my home?
Suitable replacements can be arranged on site, depending on the vehicle, access and the part required. Some installations need workshop facilities. Provide the vehicle details when enquiring so the likely requirements can be discussed.
How long should an alternator last?
There is no fixed lifespan that applies to every alternator. Vehicle design, operating conditions and the nature of any fault all matter. Symptoms and test results are a better basis for a repair decision than age alone.
Is another jump start a solution?
A jump start does not repair a charging fault. If the battery is not being charged correctly, the vehicle may stop again. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions and seek advice about diagnosis and safe recovery where needed.
Will I need a new battery too?
Not automatically. A battery affected by repeated discharge should be assessed, and any recommendation should reflect its condition. Charging and battery faults can occur together, but both need evidence before replacement decisions are made.
